Architecturedesigned and built to run onsun, rain and earth.

Pangea Biotecture is an architecture and construction company. We design, permit and build off-grid, regenerative buildings, from Earthships and passive solar homes to ICF and 3D-printed concrete, plus the power, water and waste systems that let them run on their own. Based in Taos, we build across the country and around the world.

One year at 36.4° N. In December the noon sun sits 30° above the horizon, shines under the overhang and charges the thermal mass. By June it climbs to 77° and lands on the roof instead of the glass. Winter snow and summer monsoon rain run off the roof into the cistern, and solar PV on the north roof charges the batteries. In summer the earth cooling tube under the cistern brings in cooled outside air; in winter its doors stay closed.

01Practice

Architects and builders, one team from sketch to keys.

Design, drawings and permits, construction, and the systems that make a building independent, all with one firm. Design and construction each have their own contract, so you can start with drawings and decide on the build when you are ready.

  1. 01

    Design & permit drawings

Custom plans and full construction and permit sets for Earthships, passive house and green buildings, for sites anywhere in the world.

    Drawings
  2. 02

    Construction

New buildings, additions and ADUs in rammed-earth tire, ICF, 3D-printed concrete and adobe. Our own crew builds from Taos to wherever the site is.

    Construction
  3. 03

    Off-grid systems

Solar power, rainwater catchment, greywater and blackwater treatment, and passive heating and cooling, for new or existing buildings.

    Systems
  4. 04

    Renovation & retrofit

The most sustainable building is the one already built. We retrofit existing homes toward independence.

    Renovations
  5. 05

    Excavation & site work

Grading, septic, demolition, snow and land clearing across Taos County.

02Systems

Every building is its own utility.

A Biotecture building is a thermal-mass building first and a passive solar building second. It catches and treats its own water, makes its own power and holds a steady temperature with little or no fuel. Every system can be added to an existing building, and every one can have a conventional backup.

E · Energy

Sun and battery

Solar PV with battery storage, off-grid or tied to the grid.

Electricity
P · Water

Caught on the roof

Stored in cisterns, filtered to drinking quality.

Catch water
W · Wastewater

Treated by plants

Greywater grows food indoors, then flushes the toilet.

Wastewater
M · Comfort

Heated by the sun

Glass, mass and earth keep the rooms steady all year.

04Assemblies

One standard. Four ways to build a wall.

We choose the structure building by building, for the site, budget and schedule. Every one gets mass on the inside, insulation on the outside, and the same passive solar and off-grid design.

INEARTH
W-1 · Tire

Rammed-earth tires

Upcycled tires packed with earth, bermed on the north. Enormous mass, plastered in earth.

Tire walls

W-2 · ICF

Insulated concrete forms

Foam forms filled with reinforced concrete: a continuous insulated shell around a mass core.

W-3 · 3D print

3D-printed walls

Two printed faces tied by a printed web, the cavity insulated. Printed on site from the drawings.

Adobe & earth block

Northern New Mexico's oldest way to build, laid in earthen mortar and finished in lime or mud.
