The same systems and methods can be applied to any conventional building. A retrofit adds catch water, off-grid power, wastewater treatment and heating and cooling to an existing house, which makes it more sustainable and can take it completely off-grid.
Is off-grid living legal?
What does “off-grid” mean?
At its simplest, being disconnected from the public power grid. Making your own power, growing your own food, keeping a greenhouse or livestock: all of it is off-grid living.
Is it legal?
Yes. Living off-grid is not in itself illegal. What has to be legal is the building: it needs a permit and must meet Pennsylvania’s building, health and environmental codes.
Can an existing house go off-grid?
Yes. Any of the systems can be retrofitted to a conventional building, one at a time or all together.
