WINTER SOLSTICE · 30° THERMALMASS PLANTER EARTH BERM ← SOUTH NORTH → COOLING TUBE · CLOSED COOL EARTH LOW SUN ENTERS · THERMAL MASS STORES HEAT
Section M-500. One year at 36.4° N, heating and cooling only. In December the noon sun sits 30° above the horizon, shines under the overhang and charges the thermal mass, which gives the heat back at night. By June it climbs to 77° and the overhang shades the glass. In summer the earth cooling tube draws outside air through the cool earth of the berm; in winter its doors stay closed.
01Local context

A city that already heats with the earth.

In the early 1890s a local water company found hot water rising east of Boise and piped it to nearby homes and businesses. It was the nation’s first geothermal district heating system, and it is still running.

Boise also has a voluntary Green Building Code: a roadmap for builders and developers who want to go beyond the minimum requirements of the current code on energy efficiency, materials and conservation, with planning and development incentives and project recognition in return.

Boise Green Building Code

A Biotecture building works on the same idea at the scale of one house: thermal mass and the steady temperature of the earth, charged by the sun, doing the work of a furnace and an air conditioner.
